Pick One Focus Before You Start Drawing
The most recognizable parts of Korean ethnic dress are the short jacket and long skirt worn by women, plus the vest and wide trousers worn by men. A single page cannot hold everything, so choose one clear focus first and the rest of the work becomes much easier.
- A costume profile: name the jacket, skirt, waistband, shoes, and hair accessories one by one.
- A color story: explain why white is loved, and why pink, red, and blue appear on festival days.
- A comparison: place everyday clothing next to clothing worn for celebrations.
Three Steps to Draw the Short Jacket and Long Skirt
- Sketch the frame: draw a vertical center line, one horizontal line for the shoulders, and a dot at the waist. A ratio of about one head to three body parts works well.
- Add the short jacket: it ends just below the chest, has a crossed front, slightly wide sleeves, and a narrow white collar strip.
- Pull out the long skirt: from the waist, draw a slowly widening trapezoid down to the ankles, then add two or three vertical lines for folds. Do not draw too many.
For men's clothing, simplify to a straight-front jacket, wide trousers, and a vest. Straight lines create a nice contrast with the women's outfit, and drawing only the upper body with the skirt saves time.
Text Sections That Fill the Page Nicely
Do not write one long paragraph. Split the writing into three or four small sections, each with three to five sentences.
- Costume facts: names and shapes of the jacket, skirt, vest, trousers, and white boat-shaped shoes.
- Color clues: white stands for purity and simplicity, bright colors are common for children, and older people often choose quieter shades.
- Festivals and daily life: on happy occasions people wear bright clothing and perform the long drum dance and fan dance.
- A closing line: write something you like, such as “the skirt opens like a flower.”
Planning the Layout So the Skirt Has Room
Divide the paper into one large area and two smaller ones. Put the figure and skirt in the large area, and place two small text boxes on the right, one above the other.
- Draw light pencil lines first and check that each area can hold the planned amount of text.
- Put the title at the top, taking one or two lines, in a larger font than the body text.
- Place the figure in the lower half so the skirt can stretch toward the edge and anchor the page.
- Leave a finger-wide gap between boxes, then outline them with simple borders.

- Borders: replace straight lines with cloud patterns, waves, or small grids, and finish the corners with dots.
