Start with one clear theme line
A Winter Solstice handwritten newspaper works best when it has a single strong idea. Before you draw anything, pick a theme sentence such as Dongzhi is as big as the New Year or A bowl of dumplings warms the winter. That sentence sets the mood: for family reunion, focus on dumplings and tangyuan; for the solar term itself, focus on the shortest day and the Nine Nines; for health, make winter storage the star.
Then choose three keywords, for example solar term, food, and health. Every box on the page should connect to one of them, and the layout will stay tidy.
Divide the page into food, counting, and health
An easy layout is a main title across the top, with a curved Nine Nines timeline running below it.
- Left: Dongzhi facts — the date, meaning, shortest day and longest night, and the start of the cold period.
- Middle: seasonal food table — draw a bowl or a round table and label dumplings, tangyuan, mutton soup, red bean porridge, and rice cakes.
- Right: winter storage health corner — three or four short tips about sleeping early, covering the head and neck, drinking warm water, and getting some sunlight.
If your paper is portrait shaped, turn the timeline into a string of snowflakes instead, with one name for each nine-day period.

Short sayings about Dongzhi
- If you do not eat dumplings on Dongzhi, your ears will freeze.
- Dongzhi is as big as the New Year, a small reunion for everyone.
- After eating Dongzhi noodles, each day grows a little longer.
The Nine Nines song (choose one part)
During the first and second nine, hands stay in sleeves. During the third and fourth nine, walk on ice. During the fifth and sixth nine, look for willows by the river. When the ninth nine is over, spring ploughing begins. If your space is small, just use the first two lines.
Winter health tips
- Go to bed early and wait for the sun to rise before getting up.
- Wear a hat and scarf outdoors, and avoid standing in the wind for too long.
- Drink warm water and eat fewer icy foods; a bowl of warm porridge is good for breakfast.
- On sunny days, warm your back in the sun and move your hands and feet, but do not sweat heavily.
Drawings and colors that feel warm in winter
Winter does not have to be all cold colors. Try cream for the background, date red and warm brown for titles, and light blue for snowflakes. This keeps the page fresh but still cozy. You can draw a steaming plate of dumplings, a bowl of round tangyuan, plum blossoms, snowflakes, and a small grid for the Nine Nines chart.
Draw the Nine Nines timeline lightly in pencil, then mark the coldest third nine in red. In the food area, add chopsticks or a spoon pointing to each dish to make the page feel more like daily life.
Final checks before you hand it in
- Write your class, name, and date in the bottom right corner and avoid too much empty space.
- Make the main title two or three times larger than the small headings, and use no more than three main colors.
- Keep each text block to three lines or fewer, and split long sentences into short ones.
- If there is still space, add a Winter Solstice wish or a short seasonal poem.
Write the text first, then draw the borders, and add illustrations last. If you want to save time on rough drafts, open the Wisdom Handwritten Newspaper mini program in WeChat, choose a Dongzhi template, and fill in the material above to keep creating.
