Choose a Simple Mask as the Main Image
You do not need a stage-perfect opera mask for a handwritten newspaper. A front-facing, symmetrical mask with clear color blocks is easier for students to draw and looks bold on the page. Look at three parts first: the forehead pattern, the area around the eyes, and the chin.
- Red masks often stand for loyalty and courage; large red areas make a strong main image.
- Black masks have clear lines and work well for outlines and small decorations.
- White masks leave more blank space, so blue or red patterns stand out.
- Blue and green masks are bright and can be used as small accents.
If drawing feels hard, use one large mask as the star and add small mask icons, cloud patterns, or color blocks around it.
Four Steps to Draw a Symmetric Mask
- Draw a center line. Use a pencil to make a light vertical line down the middle of the paper.
- Sketch one half. Draw the forehead, eye, nose, mouth, and chin on one side only. Keep the shapes simple.
- Copy the other half. Fold the paper to transfer the lines, or measure matching points across the center line and draw them lightly.
- Outline and color. Go over the lines with a black pen, fill large color areas first, then add small forehead and eye patterns. Erase pencil marks last.
Keep your wrist slightly lifted for smoother lines. Eyes and eyebrows are the hardest parts to match, so adjust them at the end.
Where to Put the Mask on the Page
Do not just paste the mask in the middle and stop. Plan the reading order of your handwritten newspaper first.
Center as the main image
Place a large mask in the upper left or center. Use two columns on the right for text: one for mask facts and one for opera types or character names. Let the main image take about one third of the page.
Corner as a decorative accent
If you have more text, make the mask smaller and put it in a lower or upper corner inside a curved border. Add a small column called "Mask Color File" or "Guess the Mask Pattern."
Whichever layout you choose, make the title larger and keep the line spacing even for a tidy look.
Short Mask Facts You Can Write
Short sentences and small columns are easier to arrange than long paragraphs. Try these ideas:
- Color file: Red, black, white, blue, and green help the audience tell characters apart.
- Opera card: Peking opera, Sichuan opera, and other local operas all use masks or face painting in different ways.
- Mask Q&A: Why are masks symmetrical? Why do different roles use different colors? Write two or three question-and-answer lines.
- Theater manners: Staying quiet and clapping at the right time are part of enjoying opera.
Use your own words and keep sentences short. Small headings make the page easier to read.
Quick Tips for a Tidy Handwritten Newspaper
Pencil first, black pen second, color last. This order keeps the page from getting messy. If you use markers, color large areas in one direction. If you use colored pencils, layer two coats for richer color.
Borders do not need to be complicated. A meander pattern, wavy line, or small dots can separate columns. If you want ready-made line art, mask borders, and text boxes, open the Smart Handwritten Newspaper mini program in WeChat and choose the opera mask theme to keep creating.
